EVENING EVENT 27-5-2012 PDF Print E-mail

Date: Sunday, 27th May 2012 in the EVENING

Location: The old walled city of Nicosia

Registration/Start/Finish: In the car park by the Omerieh Baths and Omerieh Mosque. The place is indicated with a red circle on the attached map.

Timings: Registration will be from 1900 hrs to 2000 hrs. Novice competitors will be permitted to join up into ‘teams’ of twos or three participants and go round the course together. More competent competitors are encouraged to have a go alone. Start times will be from 1915 hrs, as and when people arrive. The event is expected to be completely finished by 2130 hrs.

Competition Level: The course will be for novice standard (coded orange) and will be approximately 3 km in length with fifteen (11) control points to find in order.

Area Description: The event will take place in the old city of Nicosia. Controls will be placed in open spaces, or street corners, passages, parking places, trees, gates, fences etc.

Maps: Orienteering maps of a scale of 1/4000 will be provided free for Orientaction Club members and for all those attending for the first time. For those who have participated before and do not wish to become Club members, there will be a charge of €3 for the map. Please note that Orientaction Club membership is €10 per year and membership forms will be available at the registration.

Gear: Light clothing, training shoes. Please bring your own compass. Most streets are lit so no torches should be required.

Facilities: There are no facilities at the registration/start/finish area. The nearest toilets can be found in the Municipal car park in the moat.

Water will not be available at the registration/start/finish area so please bring your own water if desired. There are numerous coffee shops, bars and restaurants in the town however.

SAFETY: Please note that although traffic is quite limited in the town on Sundays, it is important that every safety precaution is taken when moving around the city. Please note that all competitors participate at their own risk and Orientaction Club will not take any responsibility for any accidents incurred.
Prohibited areas, especially the areas near the ceasefire zone will be indicated in hatched magenta lines on the competition maps issued at the start. Entry into those areas is strictly prohibited.

Please note that although orienteering is a competitive sport, it is hoped that maximum numbers will turn up and have a go for fun and that those more experienced participants will bring along some novice friends so as to introduce them to the sport. Children will be made particularly welcome. For further details please contact Mr Michael Savvides on mobile 99327764.
